Penghargaan Golden Globe untuk Aktor Terbaik dalam Film - Drama pertama kali diberikan oleh Hollywood Foreign Press Association sebagai kategori terpisah pada tahun 1951. Sebelumnya, terdapat penghargaan tunggal untuk "Aktor Terbaik dalam Film" tetapi dipisahkan untuk memberikan penghargaan kepada Aktor Terbaik - Drama dan Aktor Terbaik - Musikal atau Komedi.

Judul resmi kategori penghargaan ini bervariasi sejak awal. Pada tahun 2005, secara resmi disebut: "Penampilan Terbaik oleh Aktor dalam Film - Drama". Pada 2013, berubah menjadi "Aktor Terbaik dalam Film - Drama".
