While we are still roughly six months away from the expected unveiling of the iPhone 18 lineup, the hype for Apple’s next mobile flagship is already building. Despite the focus on Apple’s upcoming March 4 event, new leaks from industry insiders suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro will feature a bold aesthetic shift and significant internal upgrades.
A New Signature Color: Deep Red
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is currently testing a deep red—reminiscent of burgundy or a classic “Big Apple Red”—as the flagship “signature” color for the next iPhone Pro models. This would mark a departure from the “Cosmic Orange” featured on the iPhone 17 Pro.
There are also whispers of “Coffee” brown and purple hues in testing, though Gurman notes these could be variants of the red palette. While “utilitarian” colors like dark gray, black, and silver will remain staples, the deep red is expected to be the standout choice for the 2026 Pro series.
Design: Thicker Builds and Shrinking Notches
The iPhone 18 series is expected to consist of three primary models: the base iPhone 18, the iPhone 18 Pro, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. While the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screen sizes remain consistent with previous years, the internal hardware might force a slightly thicker, heavier chassis.
One of the most anticipated changes involves the Dynamic Island. Conflicting reports from sources like The Information and Ice Universe suggest Apple is working on under-screen Face ID technology. This could result in a Dynamic Island that is either 35% narrower or replaced entirely by a small pinhole cutout for the selfie camera.
Pro-Level Camera Upgrades
The iPhone 18 Pro Max may finally introduce a variable aperture camera. Similar to professional DSLR lenses, a mechanical iris would allow the camera to adjust its aperture (the opening that lets in light), giving users much finer control over brightness and depth-of-field (background blur).
Other rumored camera specs include:
- Faster Telephoto Lenses: Improved apertures for better low-light zoom performance.
- Upgraded Selfies: A move to a 24-megapixel front-facing camera across the main lineup for sharper detail.
- Simplified Controls: The “Camera Control” button may be streamlined to rely solely on pressure sensitivity rather than a mix of capacitive and force sensors.
A20 Chip and Battery Power
The heart of the new devices will likely be the A20 processor. Leaks suggest this chip will use a “Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module” process, integrating RAM directly into the wafer for massive gains in efficiency. Rumors also point to an increase to 12GB of RAM to support advanced AI features and Google’s Gemini-powered Siri.
Battery life is also set for a boost. The iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to feature a 5,000 mAh to 5,200 mAh battery, potentially utilizing new silicone-carbon battery technology to provide more power without significantly increasing the phone’s footprint.
Release Schedule Shake-up?
While Apple typically launches its entire flagship lineup in September, Bloomberg reports a potential split schedule for the 20th anniversary era. The iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the rumored “iPhone Fold” are expected in September 2026, while the base iPhone 18 and a potential iPhone Air 2 might not debut until the spring of 2027.
