Filmnya O Pagador de Promessas (1962) memenangkan Golden Palm di Festival Film Cannes 1962,[1] dan juga dinominasikan pada Academy Award untuk Film Berbahasa Asing Terbaik.[2] Film 1964-nya The Obsessed of Catule masuk dalam Festival Film Internasional Berlin ke-15.[3] Ia juga merupakan seorang freemason.
