P. weigeli secara genetik dikonfirmasi sebagai spesies berbeda pada 2017.[4] Dalam genus Pseudechis, spesies tersebut sangat berkerabat dengan ular mulga kerdil timur (P. pailsei) dan spesies yang belum dideskripsikan dari Teritorial Utara.[4]
