Jersey City adalah kota terpadat kedua[30] di negara bagian New Jersey, AS, setelah Newark.[31] Ini adalah ibu kota County Hudson,[32] dan merupakan kota terpadat di county ini[21] dan terbesar (menurut wilayah).[10] Pada sensus Amerika Serikat tahun 2020, jumlah penduduk kota ini adalah 292.449 jiwa,[33][34] meningkat sebesar 44.852 jiwa (+18,1%) dari jumlah penduduk pada sensus tahun 2010 sebanyak 247.597 jiwa,[33][34] terjadi peningkatan sebesar 7.542 jiwa ( +3,1%) dari 240.055 yang dihitung pada sensus tahun 2000.[35][36] Program Perkiraan Populasi Biro Sensus menghitung bahwa populasi kota ini adalah 286.670 pada tahun 2022,[20] menempatkan kota ini sebagai kota terpadat ke-74 di negara ini.[22]
Merupakan bagian dari wilayah metropolitan New York, Jersey City di timur dibatasi oleh Sungai Hudson dan Teluk New York Atas dan di barat oleh Sungai Hackensack dan Teluk Newark. Sebuah pelabuhan masuk, dengan tepi laut sepanjang 30,7 mil (49,4km) serta infrastruktur dan konektivitas kereta api yang luas,[37] kota ini merupakan terminal transportasi penting serta pusat distribusi dan manufaktur untuk Pelabuhan New York dan New Jersey. Terowongan Holland dan layanan angkutan massal PATH menghubungkan Sungai Hudson dengan Manhattan.[38][39] Pembangunan kembali tepi laut Jersey City telah menjadikan kota ini salah satu pusat perbankan dan keuangan terbesar di Amerika Serikat dan menyebabkan distrik dan kota tersebut dijuluki Wall Street West.[40]
Pada tahun 2023, tarif sewa rata-rata di Jersey City sebesar $2.295 per bulan hampir dua pertiga lebih tinggi dari rata-rata nasional dan menempati peringkat kesembilan tertinggi di antara kota-kota besar di AS.[41][42] Sewa di Jersey City menduduki peringkat kedua di antara 20 komunitas di wilayah metropolitan New York, di belakang New York City.[43]
