Edwin G. "Ted" Pulleyblank lahir pada tanggal 7 Agustus 1922, di Calgary, Alberta, Kanada. Ayahnya, William George Edwin Pulleyblank, adalah seorang guru matematika yang kemudian menjadi seorang wakil kepala sekolah, dan ibunya, Ruth Pulleyblank, juga pernah menjadi seorang guru. Pulleyblank adalah seorang mahasiswa antusias dengan kecerdasan cerah dan memori yang sangat baik mengenai detail, dan belajar sendiri Yunani Kuno semasa di sekolah menengah atas.[3] Dia diterima sebagai mahasiswa di Universitas Alberta tahun 1939 dengan beasiswa pemerintah provinsi Alberta, dan mengambil jurusan di Klasik Latin dan Yunani sementara juga memberikan pelajaran tambahan kepada siswa lain dalam matematika dan fisika di waktu luangnya.[3]
